The Russian president\u2019s presence would be \u201cvery helpful,\u201d the US leader said<\/strong><\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump has said that he would like to see his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Miami, but expressed doubt that he would actually come.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that the White House intends to invite Putin to the G20 summit in\u00a0December, while a senior administration official said Russia would be welcome at both ministerial meetings and the leaders\u2019 summit.<\/p>\n

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Pankin said there\u00a0was already an invitation for Russia to participate \u201cat the highest level,\u201d<\/em> but it is too early to say who will attend. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov likewise said Moscow will decide closer to the date who will represent Russia.<\/p>\n

Why the G20 both lost and found its way<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Trump said he knew nothing about any official invitation yet, but added that \u201cif he came, it would be probably very helpful.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m of the opinion that you talk to everybody. I\u2019m not one of these guys who [says] \u2018Oh, let\u2019s not talk to him,\u2019\u201d<\/em> Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday. \u201cIf you\u2019re a smart person, if you have control over your emotions\u2026 I\u2019m somebody that believes in talking.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know that he\u2019s coming. I doubt he\u2019d come, to be honest with you,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n

The summit is scheduled for December 14-15 in Miami, with Trump set to host it at his Doral golf resort. Putin has not attended a G20 summit in person since 2019, initially because of the pandemic and later amid the fallout from the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.<\/p>\n

Russia not seeking to rejoin G7 \u2013 Putin<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Trump also reiterated that Russia\u2019s exclusion from what used to be the G8 in 2014 was \u201ca stupid thing to do.\u201d<\/em> According to him, the G7 leaders now spend much of their time discussing Russia anyway, and he suggested that the conflict with Kiev might not have escalated the way it did if Moscow had remained in the format.<\/p>\n

Moscow, however, has little interest in the old G8 logic Trump keeps invoking. Peskov previously said the G8 \u201chas lost its relevance\u201d<\/em> for Russia, while the G7 looks \u201cbleak\u201d<\/em> and \u201cineffective\u201d<\/em> compared to the G20. He has also argued that the G7 no longer reflects the real balance of the global economy, whereas the G20 includes the major growth centers and \u201cbetter reflects the economic locomotives of the world.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
