The mayor of Saint-Gilles has requested reinforcements to combat \u201cterrorism\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The mayor of a Brussels suburb has denounced what he described as \u201cterrorism\u201d<\/em> and called for reinforcements after a series of explosions linked to gang violence struck the EU capital this week.<\/p>\n

At least five blasts have been reported in recent days in Saint-Gilles, a vibrant Brussels district that is also home to many EU officials.<\/p>\n

The latest incident occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday outside a shisha bar on Rue Theodore Verhaegen near Barriere de Saint-Gilles. The explosion damaged the venue and nearby homes, and shattered windows at a school across the street. No injuries were reported.<\/p>\n

Saint-Gilles Mayor Jean Spinette described the incidents as a \u201cwar between rival drug families,\u201d<\/em> calling on Interior Minister Bernard Quintin to provide immediate reinforcements to the Brussels prosecutor\u2019s office and the federal judicial police to ensure residents\u2019 safety at night.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is escalating uncontrollably, with shootings and explosions occurring back-to-back. It\u2019s a real scourge for the municipality,\u201d<\/em> he said, as quoted by local media. He called the attack on the school \u201cshocking,\u201d<\/em> describing the situation as \u201cserious organized crime\u201d<\/em> driven by rival groups competing for control of territory.

\u201cSpreading fear to gain territory <\/em>\u2013\u00a0that\u2019s called terrorism,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n

Brussels has been described as one of Europe\u2019s most affected capitals for gun-related violence, with 96 firearms incidents recorded in 2025. In the first three months of 2026, at least 22 shootings were reported, resulting in multiple injuries and one death.<\/p>\n

Public prosecutor Julien Moinil previously warned that \u201cevery Brussels resident and every citizen can be hit by a stray bullet,\u201d<\/em> calling for a coordinated crackdown on criminal networks. The federal authorities have proposed additional measures, including increased patrols and expanded surveillance in areas linked to drug activity.<\/p>\n
