He served as deputy head of the presidential administration under Yanukovich, helping to introduce judicial reforms before the Western-backed 2014 Maidan coup.<\/p>\n<p>After fleeing to Austria and Russia, Portnov returned to Ukraine in 2019 following Vladimir Zelensky\u2019s election victory, initially backing the new president before becoming one of his critics.<\/p>\n<p>\n        <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/russia\/617977-ukrainian-presidential-adviser-shot\/\"><br \/>\n            <span>READ MORE: <\/span>Fatal shooting of ex-Ukrainian presidential adviser in Spain \u2013 what we know so far<br \/>\n        <\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p>In Kiev, Portnov filed numerous legal complaints against former President Petro Poroshenko and cultivated significant influence over Ukraine\u2019s judiciary, drawing Washington\u2019s attention.
